Meta-Analysis Shows Massage Therapy Effectively Addresses Symptoms of Depression

A research review of massage for depression has found "massage therapy is significantly associated with alleviated depressive symptoms," its authors say.

Researchers from the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, systematically investigated the treatment effects of massage therapy in depressed people by incorporating data from recent studies, according to a press release on www.pubmed.gov provided by Physicians Postgraduate Press, Inc.

In addition, there are positive clinical findings showing relief for specific populations such as Pre-Natal depression and prematurity, Fibromyalgia patients and those experiencing breast cancer.

We know that during a massage the body releases endorphins, and that is generally considered to be a primary reason that the treatment is helpful for people with depression. In addition, I would like to posit that the connection with another person, the safe, non-invasive physical touch and spending time in a supportive and caring environment all contribute to the reduction of depression.

Experts agree that Therapeutic Massage is best used as an adjunct to other treatments, and not relied on alone to ease this illness. We welcome clients who are experiencing such issues at Alchemy Healing Arts Center, if you or your doctor would like to discuss options, please give us a call.
