Palms Out Relieves Pain

Neck, upper back and shoulder pain are very common these days. Amelia often jokes that seems to be the "American way" to have pain in these areas because we hold so much tension there and we are so pulled forward. Huh?

You are probably sitting at your desk right now - are your shoulders or head pulled forward? Are you leaning into the monitor, are your shoulders rotated forward? This posture is really hard on all the upper body muscles. Our pecs get shortened, rhomboids and traps get over-stretched, head goes forward, so neck muscles and upper back are all working to keep it attached. And then we get in the car and it often gets worse.

Ouch! What's a body to do?

A really simple thing to do and notice is where your hands are. When you are sitting, resting or standing, simply rotate your palms out. Feel your shoulders open. See if you can incorporate this into your day to day life, and throw in a few gentle shoulder rolls when you can. You will feel better!

Beyond that:
Stretch and lengthen in front, open up your chest, rotate your shoulders back, tighten your lats, lift the back of your head and slightly tuck your chin to bring your head back in alignment. Ahhh....

And finally, yes, get a massage. Frozen shoulders and neck issues are one of Amelia's specialties, and Laura has worked wonders with CranioSacral therapy.
